I've seen other sites do similar things with Pevear and Volokhonsky's War and Peace translation. I have been thinking about adding Dumas to the Classics Challenge, and I might have to try the Pevear translation. I don't know if that's maybe my translation, (I'm reading a different translator--Pevear & Volokhonsky) or just a case of the book being longer and more ambitious. For the Williamstown production, director Richard Nelson enlisted the help of celebrated translator team Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky to create a new English-language version. There are essentially twelve English translations (or versions) of War and Peace to date, (if you count Bromfield's so-called "Disney Version" and Komroff's radical abridgement of the Garnett translation -- see my notes below.) As I have already alluded to, abridgements of the work are on the market and I cannot generally .. Fortunately, conversations with a friend and some online sleuthing of pages 823 to 825 of the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation revealed to me the French army, battered, bleeding and hiding in Moscow. I was all set to write about how excited I am at the new Pevear/Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. They did a great job with Anna Karenina, and Penguin did a great job packaging it. I chose the Pevear/Volokhonsky by the way. Talk about getting your money's worth. I am about 1000 or so pages into the recent, Pevear-Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, who have also translated War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are behind this new version of Boris Pasternak's breathtakingly wonderful novel. The job of the 1 War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. My favorite novel of all novels is The Brothers Karamazov in the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation. It was translated by Max Hayward and Manya Harari, and lest I sound like I'm spitting in the eye of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, I loved it. I tried this novel many times in other I hope they're at work on War and Peace. But, when it comes to Tolstoi I really, really like the translations by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (they did the War & Peace I'm working on). The first translation I read YEARS ago was Constance Garnett's from 1901, and it didn't have even a fraction of the life-force of the Pevear/Volokhonsky version.
